Dr. Vliet and Dr. Lerman are awesome! When one of my dogs was afraid of going to the vet, they worked with me to make her visits as stress-free as possible. They go out of their way to make every visit great and the facility is clean and inviting. They know me by name when I come to buy dog food and always offer to bring it to the car for me if I have my two young daughters with me.

Beware though, it's not for the faint of heart.

Having staff with Fear Free certifications means that our team has had specialized training that aims to alleviate stress, anxiety, and fear while your pet is at our clinic. Our Fear Free certified staff may use multiple techniques during your visit to help calm your pet:

Giving treats to help distract. Did you notice we give out treats like candy? This is done purposefully to help distract your pet from what scares them. A great example is when a pet is afraid of the scale. Our receptionist team often uses treats to distract from the fear of the scale and redirects their attention to a delicious snack!

Print these cards, cut them down and write your favorite "do not fear" verses on the back. You may also want to include the #faithoverfearproject hashtag. Then leave them around for people to find or send them to those who need encouragement during this time of uncertainty in our world.

Prescribed Antianxiety Medications: If your pet is still rather nervous even though you have tried your best to provide a calm environment then there are medications that we can prescribe to help with anxiety and stress for veterinary visits or if needed for other aspects of their life. Gabapentin and Trazadone (for cats and dogs respectively) are the medications that we reach for to help reduce fear, anxiety, and stress medically. These medications are best if a dose is given the night before, and then the morning of the appointment. It is most effective if you can schedule your appointment around 2 hours after giving the morning dose (our front staff would be happy to help you with this). Let us know if you are interested in Gabapentin or Trazadone for your pet!

The Head Trash Clearance Method is the fear-clearance technique that I used to clear all of my pregnancy and childbirth fears. I was a tokophobic (tokophobia is the extreme fear of pregnancy and birth) and this was able to clear my fears pretty swiftly.

I explain how to use the clearance method in both my books. Fearless Birthing: Clear Your fears For A Positive Birth is ideal if your preparing for pregnancy and birth. Not only does it include the clearance method, but it helps you to apply it to your birth prep.

What does Fear Free look like in the veterinary clinic? In order to understand that, we first need to look at fear in the veterinary practice or anywhere else for that matter. Fear presents itself as FAS (fear, anxiety, and stress). Pets with FAS usually exhibit those signs by fight, flight, fidget, or freeze. Fight looks like aggression, willing to bite if needed to protect themselves from a perceived threat. Flight means the pet looks to escape, the fastest route possible. Fidget shows itself as constantly scanning the room, nervously pacing, walking in circles and other fidgety behavior. Freeze is when the pet is in such fear they are paralyzed and to afraid to move. 041b061a72
